Main Entrance Vastu: Direction, Remedies and Common Mistakes
In Vaastu Shastra, the main entrance is often called the mouth of the home. It is where people, light, air and energy enter, and it is usually the first thing a Vastu consultant looks at. In this guide we explain how entrance direction is assessed, what you can do if your door is not ideal, and the everyday mistakes that are easiest to fix.
Why the Main Entrance Matters in Vastu
Every room in the home is reached through the main door, so its position influences how energy flows through the whole space. Traditional Vastu texts divide each side of a building into segments (often called padas), and the exact segment in which the door sits is considered as important as the overall direction. That is why two east-facing homes can receive different assessments.
Entrance Directions: General Guidance
East-facing entrance
Associated with the rising sun and new beginnings, east entrances are widely favoured, particularly when the door sits towards the north-east part of the east wall rather than the south-east corner.
North-facing entrance
North is associated with opportunity and prosperity. Doors towards the north-east or centre of the north wall are generally preferred over the north-west end.
West-facing entrance
West entrances can be supportive, especially for certain professions and businesses, when the door sits in an appropriate segment of the west wall.
South-facing entrance
South entrances have a poor reputation, but the assessment depends heavily on the door’s exact position. Some segments of the south wall are considered acceptable, and remedies exist for others.
These are broad principles. The precise assessment depends on the door position, the shape of the building and the layout behind the door, which is why a floor-plan review is more reliable than a direction alone.
Common Main Door Mistakes
- Clutter at the entrance: piles of shoes, old newspapers or broken items near the door.
- Poor lighting: a dark doorway or corridor at night.
- A door that does not open fully: furniture or storage behind the door restricting it.
- Squeaky hinges and damaged doors: considered a sign of neglect and easily fixed.
- A mirror directly facing the door: traditionally believed to reflect energy back out.
- Toilet or dustbin facing the entrance: best avoided or screened.
- Main door smaller than other internal doors: the main door is traditionally expected to be the largest in the home.
- Obstruction directly outside: a pillar, pole, tree or another building edge directly facing the door (sometimes called veedhi shoola or vedha).
Simple Remedies Without Changing the Door
If your entrance is not in an ideal position, especially in an apartment where you cannot move it, practical remedies are often recommended. A consultant will choose those suited to your situation, but common examples include:
- Keeping the entrance bright, with good lighting at night
- Keeping the doorway clean and free of clutter and shoes
- Using a sturdy, well-maintained door with a proper threshold
- Thoughtful use of auspicious symbols, a nameplate and a clean doormat
- Choosing door and entrance colours suited to the direction
- Placing healthy plants on either side of the entrance where space allows
Avoid buying expensive “Vastu products” without understanding why they are recommended. Many entrance issues improve with simple, low-cost steps.
Entrance Vastu for Apartments
In a flat, the door you control is your own main door. Consider what it faces: a lift, staircase, a neighbour’s door or a corridor end. Keep your side clean and bright, and make sure your door is in good condition. For direction-wise apartment tips, read Vastu for Chennai Apartments.
Entrance Vastu for Offices and Shops
For businesses, the entrance is also the customer’s first impression. Clear signage, good lighting, an unobstructed doorway and a welcoming reception all matter. Shop entrances should invite customers in, not be blocked by stock or displays. Learn more about Vastu for Office & Shops.
The Area Just Inside the Door
Vastu also considers what you see as soon as you step in. A clear, welcoming view into the living area is preferred over a wall, a toilet door or a staircase immediately in front of you. Where the layout cannot change, a well-lit foyer, a console table or a screen can soften the transition.
Building New? Plan the Entrance First
If you are constructing a home or commercial building, the entrance can be planned in the right segment from the start, which is far easier than remedying it later. See Vastu for Plot Selection & New Construction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which direction is best for the main door?
East and north entrances are traditionally favoured, but the exact position of the door along the wall matters as much as the direction, so every home should be assessed individually.
Is a south-facing main door always bad?
No. Some positions along the south wall are considered acceptable, and remedies are available for others.
Can I fix main door Vastu without moving the door?
Often yes. Lighting, cleanliness, door condition, colours and other simple remedies can help where the door cannot be moved.
Should a mirror face the main door?
Traditionally, a mirror directly facing the main door is avoided. Place it on a side wall instead.
